Choosing the Best Sleeping Bag For Your Kid

Are you planning a family camping vacation and have kids that will be going on the expedition? If you answered yes to this question, then you may want to invest in kids sleeping bags for your young ones so that they are warm and comfortable.

Because of the simplicity of the design, kids sleeping bags are easier to manufacture and create than adult sleeping bags. Generally, kids are unlikely to be out camping in climates that are of extreme temperatures. As a parent, if you are allowing your kids to travel with for camping in extreme climates, this is rather irresponsible on your part. Kids' sleeping bags are generally manufactured inexpensively by the use of synthetic materials. Another reason that synthetic fibers are used in place of down is because synthetic does not require much maintenance and will still provide some insulation when wet. This is a good option in case it rains or something gets spilled on the bag. When people do purchase kids bags that are made of high quality materials, they are wise to purchase a bag that will at least last a few years before the kids outgrow them.

The weight of the kids sleeping bag is an important factor to consider before purchasing. Either you or your kids will have to carry their camping gear and you want to make sure that this is not going to be an concern.

Most kids sleep warmer than adults; this is due to the fact that kids have a higher metabolic rate. So, even when they lose heat fast because of their smaller bodies, they produce heat even faster. For this reason, it is no surprise that kids bags that are cheap are more popular than expensive bags.

Most of the kids sleeping bags that are on the market today, have a non-rectangular shape which includes a hood, draft tube, and draft collar. In really cold weather, the hood is critical as you lose a large amount of heat through your head.

The North Face Tigger kids sleeping bag can be used in temperatures as low as 20 degrees and is made of synthetic fill. This is one of the most popular bags for children as there are no cords to adjust the hood or chest segments. No cords mean that there is absolutely no way for a child to get tangled up in sleep.

No need to worry about if your kid will be warm or not, these sleeping bags come with draft tubes that stop the heat from escaping the kids sleeping bag through the zippers. Additionally, draft collars enhance the sleeping bags insulation properties even further by preventing the heat from radiating the shoulders and out of the sleeping bag. As you can envision there are several factors that have been well thought-out in the manufacturing of kids sleeping bags.

Tents - How to Buy One That is Right For You

There a number of factors that will decide which is the right camping tent for you. If you do not camp regularly and conditions will not be too extreme, then something cheap and cheerful should satisfy your requirements. However, if your camping tent is going to see a lot of use in all kinds of weather then it definitely is worth investing in good quality and the right design. Nothing is more dispiriting than having your camping tent falling to bits around you in the dead of a stormy night.

One of the most important things you need to consider is the number of people your camping tent needs to accommodate. Camping tents can vary in size from one-man, with just enough sleeping room for one person, to large family tents with a few rooms.

The second thing to consider is ease of use, both in terms of the weight of the tent and how easy it is to erect. If you are hiking you will want something lightweight, definitely not weighing over 5kgs. One-man tents can weigh as little as one and a half kilograms, though lighter models usually cost more.

How easy your camping tent is to erect should also influence your decision. If you plan on setting up camp somewhere for a few days, then this is not a major concern. On the other hand, if you need put up your camping tent every evening, maybe sometimes in stormy conditions, you will require something that you can assemble quickly. Many camping tents literally pop up in just a few moments, while other tents could take a good 15 minutes to erect.

There are a few different tent designs and some are better built for certain conditions and needs than others. If you are a casual camper this needn't be a big worry. On the other hand, if your camping tent will regularly be exposed to bad conditions, design can make a big difference.

Geodesic - This is regarded as the most durable of the tent designs. Intersecting tent poles ensure it has excellent strength to withstand bad conditions. This is the camping tent for the serious outdoor expeditionist.

Dome - This is perhaps the most popular tent design. It is lightweight, is inexpensive, is easy to put together and offers excellent overall strength. A common pick among backpackers.

Tunnel - Another common choice, though weighs a bit more than the dome tent. That said, it is significantly more spacious.

Finally, it is important that your tent's fabric is made from high quality material. Lightweight nylon or polyester are the best fabric for the job, and, of course, they should be fully waterproof. In addition, it is often a good idea to waterproof the seams of the camping tent yourself as a final precaution.

Tent Camping in France

France, like most of Europe, has variations in climate for which the good tent camper will have to be prepared. Some backpackers don't take tents, but the true tent camper is often going to have a tent as well as a camp stove along. If you camp in the summer, a two-season tent will usually be fine, especially in a campground. In spring or fall, a three-season model works best, along with extra layers of clothing. Temperatures will vary considerably depending where in France you are, so it's best to be prepared. Winter camping requires a tent designed to handle it, and other special supplies.

A good backpacker relies on his or her feet mostly as mode of transportation. The pack should be designed for ease of carrying, and for tent camping should handle the tent, sleeping bag (and pad if desired), stove, clothing, food for a day or so, water, and whatever else the camper might need. Carrying a light pack is the way to go, picking up what you need on the way, in small enough amounts so that you do not carry extra, will make your trip far more enjoyable than lugging a heavy pack with unused or unneeded items. The more experience you have, the more you will be able to judge what to leave behind. Good tent camping has its own learning curve.

France abounds in campsites, many perfect for the backpacker. A very good website to get an idea for where to camp is Eurocamp (www.eurocamp.co.uk), Eurocamp offers UK weekend escapes for "just you, the tent, and the outdoors". In the "Find Your Destination" frame, your mouseclick on the map in France will bring up holiday locations. Another click on a specific location will show you an actual map where the locations are. Clicking on each holiday location will give you a link to the parc, the rating in stars, and information on the resort and whether tent camping is permitted. If you are a braver sort, and know some of the language, you can search a local area or ask locals when you get there about possible places to camp. Many diehard tenters will camp wherever their feet take them, when possible, without the need for formal campgrounds.

For planners, researching each area before you head over to France will alleviate a lot of anxiety. For those who just prefer to let their feet do the walking, serendipity must be your guide. Tent camping is by far the least expensive holiday option, especially for the single man or woman, or young couple. A holiday in France requires a bit of forethought, but makes an excellent holiday pastime.

Tent Camping - A Lost Leisure?

Many tent campers today are being outraged by the over-popularity of RV use along with prices of Tents and gear. Getting "back to nature" was considered by many to simply be a tent, a fire, and good campfire cooking, while connecting with nature on an up close and personal level. It was an inexpensive way to relax, rest and enjoy the amenities of this wonderful planet we live on.

Years ago, I personally could just grab my gear, head to one of the many "camping areas" within a 100 mile radius of my home and within minutes of arriving I was set up, tent in place & hunting firewood, and enjoying the sites and sounds of nature. As time went on, the "tent" areas began to lessen.

This past weekend, We decided a simple weekend "get a way" was in order. We carefully packed our car (believe me, not easy..its a tiny Toyota Tercel) with a tent, gear (such as a mallet for the stakes, bug spray, soap, etc) a cooler of drinks & prepared meals that easily cook themselves in a campfire and off we went..to one of my favorite spots which is about 150 miles from home. My favorite spot was always this little almost deserted spot by the Gulf that we would pitch our tent by the water, enjoy the scenery and take in the fresh water and beautiful sunshine. Upon arriving, The first thing I noticed was the road was now paved,..and as we pulled into this campsite, I was shocked! There was no possible way to see the water, let alone walk on the beach. The beautiful scenery & beach were now full of RVs blocking any nature left. There was absolutely NO set area for Tents.

So taking things in stride, we left there in search of another camp ground. We called almost every place we knew of , such as "springs" "state parks" etc. Only to find they were booked or did not support TENT camping any longer. We ended back at home due to daylight with nothing more than car lag. The next day we were determined to find a "spot". We searched the Internet, called many to find the same story , or extremely High prices (50 a night for a camp spot?) some charged you not only outrageous prices, then want to charge you if you make a campfire, or use one of their grills, etc. Until 1. We were thrilled! They took Tent campers, they had spots open, "just come on in" they said. So we did. Looking around I saw Nothing but RVs. and No tents, figuring they must have a tent area somewhere on the grounds. We paid for our 1 night stay, was given a numbered spot and a map. We were placed "squeezed" in between 2 RVs. Surely this must be a mistake...we traveled around the campgrounds, not 1 fellow Tent camper anywhere on the grounds. We took what was given to us and proceeded to camp in what seemed like someones back yard. It seems this park has RVs that spend a good portion or possibly All year parked. We were the ONLY ones awake with a campfire, at 8:30 pm. With absolutely No scenery, etc.

I along with many other "Tent campers" am extremely upset over the lack of "Tent" camping. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the RVs. They are a great way to see the country, without the expense of motels, restaurants, etc. It is not the RV owners that tent campers are upset with, It is the lack of tent areas for us. It seems the camping parks and areas make a little more money off of RVs per night than tents, so Tent campers are being pushed out, to make room for RVs. Not allowed to "camp" or pay a hefty price for the privilege.

So rears my question: Tent Camping - A Lost Leisure?

The Outdoor Lifestyle- Made Better With Hammocks

What could be more natural than the hammock for outdoor adventures, activities, excursions, and living? These handy-dandy little free standing beds were invented for the harsh outdoors when there was no indoors, thousands of years ago. Jungle tribes and natives to the rugged tropical and swampland regions needed solace and safety from the rigors of the jungle floors and the muck of the tropical bogs, where both insects and the elements posed serious and often fatal risk and injury to their bodies. Born of weaved vines, leaves, tree bark, and sturdy roots, the hammock became the staple and only means of survival in the jungle during the dangerous overnight hours.

From here, the patterns and means of constructing the hammock continued to develop and evolve. Woven fabrics and braided ropes made them more durable and comfortable, and the hammock chair became a work of art for many cultures who took up the making and utilization of these suspended beds. Christopher Columbus was so impressed by these fine beds that he took them back to Europe and spread the word. Hammocks were later used for centuries on water vessels and ships.

So you see, hammocks are meant for the rugged and uncertain matters of the outdoor lifestyle, and modern times offer no exception to the rule. Vastly more comfortable than plastic chairs, wooden benches, flimsy tent floors, and clumsy fold out vinyl's, the hammock products available today can be easily incorporated into any situation, living condition, or space allotment. Hammock swings are a great alternative to full hammocks for those whose trees are too far spread. Whenever a hammock can be used without purchasing a stand, a cost effective means of comfort and relaxation has been accomplished. Good for you!

Whether for added outdoor seating during parties and family game days or for use on a camping trip, nylon hammocks are gaining popularity with astounding quickness. Camping hammocks can be found in a variety of sizes and designs, from the simplistic, lightweight, 11 ounce parachute hammock, to the 28 pound, two person, enclosed and waterproof hammock tent. The physical and emotional benefits of the hammock are being promoted by the medical community, as the ergonomic design and weightless relaxation lower blood pressure and relieve aching necks and backs. So who needs thousands of dollars worth of backyard furniture and fancy camping equipment? Not me. I prefer ease and comfort.

Ideas For a Romantic Campout

Going on a campout for just the two of you can be the most romantic experience ever - or it can turn into your worst nightmare and wreck a relationship. The trick to a terrific and sizzling campout is to plan correctly for it. That means making a list, checking it twice and getting so enthused that your partner catches the enthusiasm.

The first part of planning your romantic campout is to choose a location. Depending on where you are, that could be easy or tricky. Do some research and find the most enjoyable countryside drive you can - one that you'll "Oh....and Ah" about on the way to your destination. If you're staying in a state park, take note of the hours, facilities, restrictions and anything else that may enhance or put a damper on your trip.

If you can find a location that has a great view, you're ahead of the game. It can be on a bluff overlooking the great outdoors, next to a lake or the ocean - or in the middle of the forest. Just be sure there are fellow campers nearby - but not too close. After you've chosen the perfect location, it's time to plan what you're going to take. Some amenities that are sure to impress and ensure that your campout is the romantic dream you want it to be are:

* Comfy bedding - A sleeping bag isn't enough. Wow your partner with bedding fit for royalty - satin sheets, down comforters and a mattress that will make her want to linger in bed the next morning. You may even want to bring some rose petals to sprinkle on top of the bedding to create a super-romantic atmosphere. * Romantic meals - Plan your meals carefully. Be sure you include appetizers like cheeses and fruit. Consider bringing a portable grill if the park doesn't furnish one - and marinate some steaks or prepare food so that it will be ready when you're ready to cook. And don't forget the wine! * Candles to set the mood - Place candles everywhere - around the bed and on the table or surface where you're going to eat dinner. Candles are incredibly romantic. * Activities - If you're going to be there for more than one day, plan hiking trips to discover what nature has to offer. Come prepared by reading about the area to find places and other things of interest. Don't forget your IPod and load it with some romantic music so you and your partner can dance by firelight. Card or board games and some reading material ensure that you won't be bored.

Don't forget essentials, like toiletries and materials to make a great bonfire. A romantic campout can be an inexpensive and exciting way to connect with the one you love. It can also be a sensual journey that you'll both enjoy - if you plan it correctly.
